John Uwins takes home the new Simon Parkin Trophy

Ten members enjoyed a fantastic day of Golf Croquet last Sunday (28/09/2014) competing for the new Simon Parkin Trophy. This was the first time the club have held a men only event and testosterone levels were running high on another beautiful late summer day.

We completed a round robin between five players on each of two courts with four players having won three of their four matches. John Uwins and Neil Humphreys were also equal with the top hoop difference of nine. They went on to play a final game which ended with John winning seven – five.

The new trophy was donated by Joyce Parkin and her daughters Kate and Emma, in memory of Simon who passed away in June this year after being ill for some months. Simon was a lovely man and an enthusiastic croquet player who is much missed at the club.

Joyce and her family came along to watch the end of play and Joyce presented the trophy to the winner.

Congratulations also to Neil as runner up and Paul Robinson and Brian Parsons who narrowly missed the cut for the final.

Thanks also to all the ladies who came along to support us and especially Ena Uwins who acted as scorer.

Weston-super-Mare visit

On Tuesday and Wednesday, this week, we welcomed the Weston-super-Mare Croquet Club as part of their croquet tour. We have just received the following email from their Chairman, Doug Norfolk.

Dear Linda,
As chairman of our club I would like to thank you and your members for the kindness shown to us during our visit to you as part of our tour. We particularly liked the idea of mixing the clubs for playing doubles it was new to us and very enjoyable. An item of conversation on arriving back at Warner’s by each party was the cakes and it was a close run thing which was favourite between the ginger and the flap jacks. Again I personally would like to thank you for allowing us to visit your club and for your warm hospitality and as I said if a group of your members wished to wander afar for a game of croquet you will always be welcomed at our club, we would love to see you.
My kindest Regards
Doug Norfolk

Thank you Doug for your comments. The players on our side would also like to say how much we also enjoyed the two days of very enjoyable croquet… not to mention the cake!

We’ve also had a look at your web-site at www.westoncroquet.co.uk and hope to see you there some time.

Visit from Bransgore Croquet Club

On Monday 10th August, Bransgore Croquet Club travelled from the New Forest for a friendly match which we hope will become an annual event.

As it was our first encounter we played mixed doubles with a visitor paired with a Chichester member which is a great way of getting to know each other. The sun shone and after two rounds and a picnic lunch we enjoyed two further games rounded off with afternoon tea and the day was pronounced a great success.  We’re now looking forward to visiting Bransgore on Friday, 12th September for a more competitive match – may the best team win!!

Golf Doubles Tournament (Kettle Shields) Results

We had a fantastic day of hotly contested Golf Croquet on Sunday. The weather was equally hot.

Everyone played 4 games with a different partner in each game. Betty won all four games and was announced as the outright winner. Janet was declared as the winner among those winning three games because she had the lowest number of hoops scored against her.

The event was organised by Carole and Brian Parsons with encouragement from our former member Paddy Jones, who previously ran the event for many years.

Two identical shields donated by Norman and Dora Kettle were presented to the winners by Carole.

Friendly against Bognor Regis Croquet Club

Picture

Peter, Brian, Edna and Janet met the team from Bognor for a friendly match on Friday afternoon. Everyone played three doubles games (without handicaps) and the score ended up with a home win 4-2. The hoop score was 34-31. We all had an entertaining afternoon and a lovely tea.

Here we are at the end of the afternoon.

Now looking forward to the Kettle Shields doubles tournament on tomorrow (Sunday)

The detailed results are available in our Members Only Blog.

Fixtures This Week

Updated 31/07/2014

We have home matches on Wednesday a Friday this week . Please remember that that the lawns will not be available for the usual afternoon Golf croquet sessions.

On Wednesday 30th July, we welcome Rother Valley Croquet Club for a SECF Handicap Golf League match.

Bognor Regis Croquet Club will be joining us for a friendly match on Friday 1st August.

Golf Doubles Tournament (Kettle Shields)

This event will be held on Sunday 3rd August. Players are partnered randomly to make the contest as even as possible. It will be managed by Carole & Brian Parsons. Two identical shields donated by Norman and Dora Kettle will be presented to the winners.

Carole and Brian have added this explanation.
We play what is known as “promiscuous doubles” which means that we change partners for each game.
The partners are drawn randomly. The games are worked out in advance using numbers and then names drawn to replace the numbers. We will play 4 games each (using handicaps) and the winners will be the 2 players with the most wins (or the most hoops taken at the end of the day in the event of a tie).
We have a record of 22 players this year so we look forward to a good day.
